Broadbridge Heath 1

POTTAGE faced Horsham-based side Broadbridge Heath looking to maintain top spot in County 3.

‪The early exchanges showed this was to be a physical encounter, with the home side relentless in recovering possession at every opportunity.

The hard work of David Lucas and Reece Abbott in midfield allowed Pottage to keep their opponents in their half for most of the half and the Pottage pressure paid off after with a goal from Jamie Wanstall.

Tom Tolfrey made it 2-0 after converting a penalty just before half-time when he was brought down inside the box.‬‬ The second half started off the opposite to the first with Broadbridge Heath taking the game to Pottage and creating chances of their own.

The home side re-shuffled and introduced James Francis and although Broadbridge Heath continued to work hard Pottage looked like taking the three points.

Pottage went down to 10 men following a sending off and were forced to dig deep for the last 10 minutes and Dan Attwater got one back for Heath before finding themselves also down to 10 men leaving Pottage to take the three points.‬‬

The aim of the shceme is to help them achieve their Olympic and Paralympic dreams at London 2012, Rio 2016 and beyond.

Great Britain’s No.1 discus thrower Jade Nicholls, from Maidenbower received a GLL grant in 2011 and enjoys training at K2 Crawley.

‘I’m on course to qualify for the Olympic Games in London 2012 and am training as hard as I can to continue moving up the rankings,” she said.

The dig begins for historical treasure on the former Sussex House site

ARCHAEOLOGISTS have begun digging up the former Sussex House site and will deposit any findings with Crawley Museum.

Contractors have five weeks to dig trenches on the site between Peglar Way and High Street before work begins on the new development.

In November Crawley Borough Councils planning committee unanimously approved proposals to build a Morrisons, a 110‐bed Travelodge hotel, new restaurants and a 500 space car park on the former office block and ten‐pin bowling alley site.

Iain Williamson, an archaeology consultant for URS, said: “We have found a line of five or six square post lines which look to be the structure of a possible medieval house block.

“There is also a drainage ditch and a spread of iron working waste which again possibly dates to the late medieval period.

“Crawley was the centre of the wrought iron industry and we appear to have a layer of waste material associated with iron production in this part of Crawley.”

The on-site car park will remain open and accessible throughout these initial works and has been phased to keep the maximum number of possible spaces available.

A report will be made at the end of the dig which will record any findings and will inform future archaeologists.

The scheme is the first part of Town Centre North.

Chris Ward, Land Securities’ development director, said: “Though we are not yet in a position to finalise the construction timetable, we are pleased to be taking this important step.

“We will keep the community informed of our progress, and hope that people bear with us while these preliminary works take place.

“Anyone with queries can contact us via our usual Freephone project community line or email address.”

Evans confirmed this week that a number of his players had been the subject of bids, with Matt Tubbs, Barnett, Kyle McFadzean, Sergio Torres and Pablo Mills all attracting interest - the Reds manager has previously stated this season that Barnett will become the first £1million player to leave Crawley.

More transfer frustration for Crawley Town

CRAWLEY manager Steve Evans had had two bids for strikers rejected.

Reds are keen to strengthen their attacking options in their bid for promotion from League 2, and Evans today confirmed he has had offers rebuffed for Hearts attacking midfielder Ryan Stevenson and Oxford United frontman James Constable.

Stevenson has scored four times in 22 appearances for SPL side Hearts this season, and Crawley could still bring him to the Broadfield Satdium, but not until the summer, while Constable has netted nine for Oxford this term.

Evans confirmed: “We are some distance apart in what we offered to what those clubs wanted so we will move on to alternative targets we have identified.

“In respect of Ryan Stevenson, we are now in discussions with his advisors in respect of a pre-contract that would see the player join us in the summer but we will see how that progresses.”

Reds have been frustrated so far in this transfer window, with offers turned down for Andy Drury of Ipswich, Southend’s Bilel Mohsni, Rotherham striker Lewis Grabban and Falkirk’s top scorer Farid El Alagui.

Meanwhile, Evans wants to keep hold of his 13-goal frontman Tyrone Barnett, who was reportedly the subject of an offer from Championship club Blackpool this week.

“As for Tyrone Barnett, there has been a number of written and verbal offers but I am still hopeful we can keep him. He is a very talented lad, in fact he is a super player and as a manager I want to work with him and his type.

“He has improved out of all recognition since the summer and there is much more to come from him.”

Late drama as Crawley are held by Plymouth

0

CRAWLEY Town were denied by a dramatic late equaliser as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Plymouth Arygle today.

A Pablo Mills goal shortly before half time looked to have given the Reds all three points and put them on course to a return to the top of League 2, but when Maxime Blanchard struck in stoppage time, Crawley had to be content with a share of the spoils.

The home side had made a terrific start as Ashley Hemmings’ run was halted illegally on the edge of the box in the opening 30 seconds, and after Reds failed to clear the danger from the free kick, Warren Feeney hooked a shot wide. In a pulsating start to the game, Kyle McFadzean and Tyrone Barnett had shots blocked, while Sergio Torres earned a booking after he sent Feeney sprawling. Hemmings proved his threat again after a quarter of an hour, skipping past David Hunt before his low cross was cleared at the near post by Dean Howell.

Reds played with the wind at their backs in the first half, and when one of Hunt’s long throws was carried on the breeze, Matt Tubbs’ acrobatic volley flew over, and seconds later McFadzean’s low drive was deflected inches wide of the post.

It took 26 minutes for the first save of the game, as Tubbs swivelled six yards out and saw his shot blocked by Jake Cole, and as the Reds kept the pressure on with a Torres cross, new Plymouth signing Darren Purse sliced just over his own bar. Scott Shearer was called into action five minutes later, when Hemmings attempted a long range volley, and it was comfortable for the Crawley stopper.

Crawley did have the upper hand throuhgout the first half, and deservedly went in front when an unmarked Pablo Mills met David Hunt’s free kick, and planted his header past Jake Cole’s outstretched left hand.

And it should have been 2-0 on the very stroke of half time, released by Neilson on the break, Barnett was clean through, but a heavy first touch saw Cole gather.

It was scrappy fare for the first few minutes of the second half, but when Plymouth threatened just before the hour, McFadzean produced an heroic block to deny Feeney, Mills had to do the same again two minutes later on the edge of the box as the Pilgrims enjoyed a bright spell.

Crawley played on the break at times, and Tubbs tested Cole in the Plymouth goal with a low shot after Barnett had pounced on a loose ball.

For the last 20 minutes, the Reds did a good job of keeping the ball away from the danger area, spending long periods in and around the Plymouth area. But there was late drama in an end to end finish, as Plymouth levelled with 30 seconds to play. Crawley keeper Shearer had made a superb save from Hemmings, but soon after the ball was launched into the box, Blanchard’s overhead kick somehow crept in to snatch a point. There was still late drama to come as Scott Neilson appeared to be felled on the edge of the box, but there was no penalty - only the final whistle.

Reds: Scott Shearer, David Hunt, Pablo Mills, Claude Davis, Dean Howell, Dannie Bulman, Scott Neilson, Sergio Torres, Kyle McFadzean, Tyrone Barnett, Matt Tubbs.

Subs: Michel Kuipers, Hope Akpan (on for Davis 45), Ben Smith, Charlie Wassmer, Josh Simpson.

Plymouth: Jake Cole, Paul Bignot, Darren Purtse, Maxime Blanchard, Onismor Bhasera, Luke Young, Paul Wotton, Simon Walton, Ashley Hemmings, Warren feeney, Matt Lecointe.

Subs: Romain Larrieu, Durrell Berry, Joe Lennox (on for Young 87), Ladjie Soukouna (on for Feeney 65), Craig Sutherland (on for Lacoint 87).

Reds rue late lapse at Plymouth

BITTERLY disappointed Crawley players and management admitted a late error cost them the win at Plymouth Argyle today.

The Reds had looked on course for a return to the top of League 2 after Pablo Mills’ first half header had given Steve Evans’ men a 1-0 lead. But despite a glorious chance for Tyrone Barnett on the stroke of half time and being on the back foot for long periods, Plymouth remained in the match and snatched a 90th minute point when Maxime Blanchard was left unmarked to make it 1-1 with an overhead kick inside the six yard box.

Assistant manager Paul Raynor said: “Somebody didn’t do a job from a set piece. Just as someone switched off for our goal, Tyrone Barnett switched off. His man scored the equaliser and that’s the bottom line.

“The match should have been dead a buried by then, we created chances and didn’t kill the game off. When there is a slender lead that can happen when people do not do their job from set pieces.”

Skipper Pablo Mills, whose free header from David Hunt’s free kick gave Crawley the lead, added: “After all that hard work and graft, to let in a sloppy goal like that was disappointing.

“When you come away from home you don’t score too many goals and I thought we were solid until that goal.

Crawley were denied a penalty in the dying seconds of stoppage time, when Scott Neilson was sent tumbling, and the Reds might have had up to two more spot kicks in the 90 minutes, but every appeal was waved away by referee Philip Gibbs.

Raynor added: “That’s a stonewall penalty. Everybody in the ground sees it apart from the most important man, he had the whistle and decided not to blow it, I didn’t feel we had the rub of the green from the officials all afternoon, we didn’t get what we feel we deserved.”

Newcastle prospect to board the Gus Bus?

Brighton and Hove Albion are set to add Newcastle United starlet James Tavernier to their ranks – days before the two teams meet in the FA Cup.

The defender recently returned to Tyneside after a successful spell at Sheffield Wednesday in League One and is now likely to link up with a Championship outfit.

And, according to reports in the North East, Brighton are the favourites to land the 20-year-old right back.

Toon boss Alan Pardew, who has previously loaned Kazenga Lua Lua to the south coast club before cashing in on the left winger, recently said, “I think he’ll go to the Championship this time, and do well.”

Bookies link Brighton with Manchester United’s Michael Owen

England legend Michael Owen has once again been linked with a sensational loan move to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Throughout the summer the Seagulls were among the favourites to snap up the one-time England goal-grabber who has failed to find his feet at Old Trafford despite his enviable scoring record throughout his career.

Now the Albion have been installed as 7/4 favourite with one online bookmaker to finalise a loan deal for Owen before the end of the January transfer window.

Brighton fans though have laughed off the unlikely deal – having seen the Championship outfit linked to the former England star numerous times before only for nothing to come of the rumours.

It seems the bookies are still putting two and two together and coming up with five with regards to the Owen move, which is considered as little more than pie in the sky.

Amex boss Gustavo Poyet has said he hopes to make a pair of significant signings over the coming weeks, but Owen is almost certainly not going to be among them.

Faili praises keeper after battling Bridges earn Vase replay

THREE Bridges manager Paul Faili picked out his goalkeeper Simon Lehkyj for producing a man of the match display which helped earn them a 1-1 draw away to Derbyshire side Gresley in their FA Vase fourth round tie on Saturday.

They must all go again in the replay at Jubilee Field this Saturday for a place in the last 16.

Bridges took an early fourth minute lead from the penalty spot put away by Tim Rivers after Abu Touray was brought down by keeper Gary Hately.

Bookies’ favourites to win, Gresley equalised through Royce Turville nine minutes into the second half and although both sides had their chances, Bridges had a lot to do to stop Gresley from adding a second during the 120 minutes played.

Faili said: “I thought we were good for the draw. There were times when we could have nicked it and times when they could have nicked it. They (Gresley) were quick and you could see they are a quality side who worked exceptionally well across the park.

“For me our man of the match was Simon Lehkyj who was pulling saves out of the bag that no normal goalkeeper has ever done. He was unbelievable.

“Callum Donaghey stepped up in Ellis Hooper’s shoes and was a tower of strength.”

Faili also praised the warm welcome given by the host club and reckoned: “This is the best place I have ever been to in five years in charge. Their fans were absolutely brilliant and I’ve never seen such support (524 attendance) for step five football.”
