A seven-foot mirror which fatally injured a Crawley boy was not secured to a wall, an inquest heard.
Detective Sargeant Christopher Whitwell of Thames Valley Police said the death of Austen Harrison, from East Street in Turners Hill, Crawley, had been “very tragic”.
He appeared before Oxfordshire Coroner Mr Darren Salter on Wednesday (January 19).
Austen died at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford on June 8 after suffering severe head injuries in the Hugo Boss store in Bicester Village at around 8.40pm on June 4.
Det Sgt Whitwell told the inquest: “The mirror was supposed to be fixed to the wall, and it would appear it was not fixed to the wall.
“It is clear that at some point it became inherently unstable and fell onto Austen.”
The inquest heard how Austen had been with his father Simon in the changing area of the store when the accident occurred.
The inquest was opened and adjourned pending the completion of investigations by Thames Valley Police and Cherwell District Council health and safety officers.
