Like the majority of councillors from both parties, I am personally very sorry to see Bob Lanzer step down as the leader of Crawley Borough Council.
Bob has worked tirelessly for the town; he is widely respected and will be missed as leader by councillors, council staff, Crawley residents and partner organisations.
I have witnessed on many occasions Bob facing up to considerable personal pressure in order to ensure the best outcome is achieved for the town.
Being leader of the council can be a thankless task. Bob has never courted adulation or praise, but has simply focused on getting the job done.
Bob was an exceptional leader and will be a hard act to follow, but he leaves behind an experienced and cohesive team.
Bob himself remains very much a part of that team and his expertise will be invaluable in insuring we continue to provide good quality facilities and value-for-money services.
I feel honoured to be heading up this team and to be acting leader of the Council.
There is a positive attitude within the group and a feeling that it is now time to move forward. We have been through some turbulent events recently, but by standing together and focusing on what really matters, the town of Crawley, we have come through and are stronger for it.
There is a genuine sense of solidarity and calm within the administration, and an eagerness to move forward.
Over the years I have been asked if I would consider standing for leader. I have always made it clear that this is not a role I would wish to take up. I look forward to working with and supporting the new permanent Council leader who we intend to be in place next month.
It is now very much business as usual.
