Crawley Down Gatwick gave a mediocre performance against no more than an average side as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Walton & Hersham.

After a bright start by the visitors, Walton & Hersham took the lead in the 20th minute when Anvils full-back Marvin Farrell thought the ball was running out was caught by Ben Hammond whose cross found the dangerous Will Turl who prodded home.

Down got themselves into the game more as the half progressed with Liam Wright lifting a good chance over and eventually equalised three minutes before the interval coming more into the game with Liam Wright, Ash Robinson tried his luck far out, the ball cannoned off a defender only to find Wright to prod home.

Turl was a constant menace with his height for Walton in the home penalty area.

Down certainly did not get the rub of the green with first Steve Robinson, Gary Holloway and Liam Wright all taking knocks.

Despite having to play the last 20 minutes with only ten men after they had a player sent-off, Walton refused to buckle against infrequent Anvil attacks.

Then to add even more salt to injury, a break from the back by full back Andy Lomas enabled him to crash home the visitors’ second goal.

The strike earnt the Swans the three points and knocked Crawley Down off the top into second place in the table.
