Crawley Town have invested in new surface covers for their pitch which will be in place ahead of Saturday’s game with Stevenage.

On Thursday the club took delivery of covers from Tildenet with more to come on Friday that will protect the entire Broadfield playing surface, increasing the chance of this weekend’s League One match going ahead.

According to the Met Office this January has been the wettest since records began with games up and down the country at all levels postponed as pitches remain saturated with water.

Reds’ chief groundsman Matt Moss, like many others has endured a really challenging start to the year but he told the club’s website: “I am by nature a positive person and I am optimistic that Saturday’s game will go ahead with the measures we are taking.

“We have had record levels of rainfall in the last month or so and it has been extremely hard just keeping the surface in reasonable condition.

“No one is more disappointed than me when games are called off but now we can cover the entire pitch it will give us a much better chance of getting matches played.”

Heavy rain is now expected to move in by Friday evening but the club hope to have all the covers in place by then, and they will also provide protection against frost with a cold snap expected to move in at the beginning of next month.
