Crawley’s European boxing champion Ben Jones is aiming for the town’s largest ever sporting event to be held at Broadfield Stadium.
His backers Assassin Promotions are looking for a big name opponent from anywhere in the World to come to take on Ifield’s finest for a ‘major title’ in May.
Jones wants the town to get behind him as an anticipated 7,000 crowd would be the target to make the event worthwhile.
Last season his team managed to get a title fight lined up but it was pulled because the Reds refused to put on a show which could damage the pitch while the football season was still running.
This time it has been scheduled for May 10 which is after Crawley’s final fixtures will have been played.
It will be his first fight since his controversial defeat in Barcelona in last Autumn against Spanish champ Juli Giner.
Jones said: “I want the whole of Crawley to get behind me. My opponent is not yet confirmed but I could well know next week. He could be from anywhere in the world.
“I did ask my last opponent Juli Giner who beat me in Barcelona last year but his promotors refused as they didn’t think he really won out there in front of Spanish judges so they didn’t think he had a chance of winning over here!
“It will be a piece of history and will be good for the town. there will be plenty of extra custom in the area for hotels and pubs.”
Crawley Town showed their solidarity with the local hero by including him in their team which took part in an airplane pull for Sport Relief last week at Gatwick.
Headed up by Match of the day’s Gary Lineker, Jones joined forces with the Reds’ Sergio Torres, Josh Simpson and Billy Clarke who were in the Crawley team.
Jones, 32, is also filming for a TV documentary which will be aired in the run-up to the Checkatrade.com Stadium show and again afterwards.
It will be an updated version of the Outside The Ring programme about Jones’ life as a professional boxer which was shown last year.
It will include interviews and scenes of him training in preparation for this fight, plus scenes from the big fight itself.
Jones would like to hear from any companies or individuals who would like to sponsor him.
He could promise good exposure around the town on billboards and could even appear in his TV programme.
