A force for good

The past week has been a quiet one on the Mayoral front but more of what I did get up to later.

The lack of engagements meant I could recover from a viral infection - I believe it is sometimes known as man flu - that laid me low for a couple of days.

Then I was able to make a start on doing some work in the garden.

Why is it that there is always so much work to do in a garden?

At least the front garden now looks a little better than it did!

But back now to telling you about what I got up to.

One thing that mayors sometimes do is to support other mayors and chairmen of Councils as they raise funds for their chosen charities.

On Saturday the Mayoress and I were in Horsham taking part in a music quiz.

Music is not normally my strong point but the quiz was all about many of the classic musicals that have been produced over the years.

The whole evening was an absolute delight, an opportunity to watch video clips and to sing along to some of the well known and well loved songs from the various shows.

The team we were in, made up of other chains and their partners, finished in a very creditable joint second place so we did not really let the side down.

Monday 14 March was Commonwealth Day and to mark the occasion I had the honour of reading the citation and raising the Commonwealth Flag at the Town Hall.

The flag was one of over 500 raised across the country from the farthest east to the farthest west and from the far north to the far south - the largest single raising of the flag in the history of the Commonwealth.

Incidentally, the Commonwealth Flag was raised in Antarctica at three sites there as well.

The Commonwealth, a voluntary association of independent and equal sovereign states, is one of the largest groups of its kind in the world and is recognised world-wide as a compelling force for good and one which advances the need for respect for all states and peoples and concern for the vulnerable.

These qualities are ones it would be good for us all to live by as we go about our daily lives.
