A man has been jailed for five years after he was found guilty in court of stabbing a man in the throat in Crawley.

Tommy Smith, 39, of Barley Close, was jailed yesterday (Thursday) following a two day trial at Lewes Crown Court at which he pleaded not guilty to wounding with intent.

The attack happened on December 28 2011 in the car park of the Three Bridges Free Church.

The 41-year-old victim was stabbed in the throat from behind in an unprovoked attack and, after, went to a near-by bookmakers, where staff called an ambulance and police.

Detective Constable Simon Goulding of West Sussex CID said: “The victim in this case was very lucky that his injuries were not more serious as the stab wound was very close to his jugular.

“Thanks to some quick police work at the scene vital evidence was gathered, including arrests made, and some good care from the ambulance service ensured the victim was in good hands.”

Five men were arrested by police and Smith was subsequently charged.

No further action was taken against the remaining four.
