THE number of drink drivers caught on the county’s roads in June increased this year following targeted checks by Sussex Police.
The Force’s annual drink drive campaign, which ran throughout June, saw 2,177 breath tests carried out with 117 people arrested after failing the test.
For the same campaign last year 98 people were arrested after 3,744 tests were carried out.
Chief Inspector Phil Nicholas, of Sussex Police’s Road Policing Unit, said: “Everyone knows that drink-driving is against the law and contributes to accidents on our roads, but sadly some drivers still appear to be ignoring the facts.
“Throughout the year we have been collating intelligence from local residents and anonymous information about areas where drink driving is known to take place.
“Static checks were set up around the county in these hotspots and drivers were stopped and spoken to and breathalysed if officers had suspicions that they had been drink driving.
“I would urge anyone who suspects that someone is driving under the influence of alcohol to tell us by reporting this to Sussex Police on 101 or 999 if the activity is currently taking place. “
