Crawley Town director of football Selim Gaygusuz believes their new signing from Manchester United will make a real impact.

Midfielder Matty Willock has joined Reds on a transfer deadline day loan deal which will see him remain at the League Two club until the end of the season.

The 22-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance for the Premier League giants, but has played in the Dutch League as well as the Scottish Premiership on loan.

He was an unused substitute for two of United's Premier League games during the 2016-17 season.

Reacting to the new addition, Gaygusuz said: "We are really excited to have such a young and versatile player like Matty joining us for the rest of the season.

Willock will join up with the squad on Thursday and is expected to be available for Saturday's trip to Bury.

Brighton & Hove Albion under-23 striker Stefan Ljubicic has joined Eastbourne Borough on loan until the end of April.

The 19-year-old will link up with the National League South side, and could make his debut in their game away at Truro City on Saturday.

Under-23 coach Simon Rusk said, “Stefan has made good progress here, successfully moving up into the under-23 age group at the start of this season.

“We felt it was in the best interests of all concerned for him to go out on loan, and play in a very competitive National League South division.

“I’d like to wish Stefan all the very best for the rest of the season, and I’m sure this move will be very beneficial for his development.”

Ljubicic has made five league appearances for Albion’s under-23s this season, and featured in the Checkatrade Trophy match away at MK Dons.

He is also an Iceland under-21 international, making his debut in a 1-0 defeat to Northern Ireland back in October.

Borough manager Jamie Howell added, “We are delighted to bring Stefan into the squad. He is a player with great potential and we look forward to working with him.

“With Joe Quigley’s loan deal expiring, it was important we brought someone in. I’m sure Stefan will be a great addition and one the fans will enjoy watching.

“There is every chance he, and perhaps another new face from a Premier League team, will be involved against Truro.”

Police appeal after ‘serious’ M25 crash

An appeal for witnesses has gone out from Surrey Police following a ‘serious collision’ on the M25 this morning near Cobham services.

The three-vehicle crash - involving a silver Mazda, a black Volkswagen Golf and a white lorry - happened at around 5.51am near Junctions 9/10.

A woman in her 60s and man in his 70s in the Mazda suffered serious injuries, while a man and woman in the VW Golf were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The lorry driver was unhurt.

Traffic built up as the anticlockwise carriageway was closed for investigations. One lane is currently still shut and police say there are ‘significant delays back to Junction 11.’

A spokesman said: “Anyone with any information, or dashcam footage should contact Surrey Police via 101 or use http://surrey.police.uk/TellUsMore, quoting reference PR/P19024109.

“You can also give information, 100 per cent anonymously, to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111; or through their anonymous online form: https://crimestoppers-uk.org/”

Universal Credit: Thousands of people in Crawley have been moved onto scheme

Thousands of people in Crawley have been moved on to Universal Credit, despite concerns it could push claimants further into debt.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation says the new benefits system could represent a positive change, but in its current form risks pushing people on low incomes into financial trouble.

| See how the number of people on Universal Credit compares across Sussex – Adur; Arun; Brighton and Hove; Chichester; Eastbourne; Hastings; Horsham; Lewes; Mid Sussex; Rother; Wealden; Worthing |

Department for Work and Pensions figures show 2,451 benefit claimants in Crawley had been moved onto Universal Credit by the middle of last month – five times the number of people enrolled on it in September 2017.

The Government plans to fully implement its flagship welfare system by the end of 2023 – it was originally due to be up and running by April 2017.

Under the scheme, six different types of benefits are being rolled into one monthly payment, including jobseekers’ allowance and working tax credit.

Of those who had been moved to the scheme in Crawley last month, 42 per cent were in employment.

Across the country, more than 1.5 million people have so far been moved on to Universal Credit.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation said its own numbers suggest a further 1.7 million will be transferred in the next year. While claimants are not actively being transferred to Universal Credit, anybody with a change in circumstances, for example a change in employment, will be moved.

Helen Barnard, from the charity, said: “At the minute, I think we are getting false nostalgia for the old system. Actually, it is being changed for a reason.

“The figures we have show that there are a large number of people who will gain from transferring onto the new system.”

However, Ms Barnard pointed to the five-week wait before payments begin, child care payments being made in arrears and housing benefits being paid to claimants, rather than landlords, as issues with the new system.

Talking about the wait, she said: “People on low incomes most often have no savings or very low savings. Some people simply end up going without essentials – going without food or whatever they can.

“The Government’s response to a lot of this has been that they offer advances, but having to pay back debt is one of the things which pushes people into the worst levels of poverty.”

A Department for Work and Pensions spokesman said: “Universal Credit is a force for good for the vast majority with people moving into work faster and staying in work for longer.

“We have made numerous improvements, including increasing advances to 100 per cent, removing the seven-day waiting period and paying people’s housing benefit for two weeks while they wait for the first payment.

“Working parents can claim back up to 85 per cent of eligible childcare costs and housing costs can be paid directly to landlords where requested.”

Celebrate the BAFTAs like the stars

Sunday, February 10, sees this year’s BAFTA ceremony take place.

The great and the good from the acting world will assemble in the Albert Hall to hear the words “and the winner of this year’s award is...”

While waiting to learn who has won and who hasn’t, all guests will be enjoying some delightful wines provided by two companies who are again sponsoring the Awards Ceremony.

Any celebration naturally has to involve the world’s best bubbly, and Champagne Taittinger is sponsoring the event for the 17th year. One of the last independently owned great Champagne houses, it has always been a great supporter of the arts. The finesse and elegance of a top champagne is a fitting complement to those that have reached the pinnacle of their careers within the film industry. A quote from the company website demonstrates their philosophy:

“From time to time, life strays from its course and slows down, simply to focus on a single moment. These fragile, fleeting moments are intense, special and sweet. They suspend the passage of time and imprint images, smells, tastes and shared feelings on our memories. Taittinger is proud to be able to enhance, and to sometimes even create, the warm feelings which surround such captivating occasions.”

As the premier producer of New Zealand wines, Villa Maria is sponsoring the event for the 11th year. Last year, Villa Maria was named one of the most admired wine brands in the world for the third year in a row, and again is a fitting wine producer to support the film business elite.

Throughout the 1960s Villa Maria was a one-man band, owned and run by George Fistonich. He made dry red and white wines, sourcing grapes from the greater Auckland regions. In the early 1970s George started to employ staff and the company began to expand rapidly. Today, Villa Maria employs more than 250 permanent staff and exports wine to more than 50 countries worldwide.

This year’s awards, hosted by Joanna Lumley, will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One and BBC One HD. The ceremony is also broadcast in all major territories around the world.

Guests will also enjoy a thrilling performance by Cirque du Soleil on the night.

Champagne Taittinger and Villa Maria’s partnerships with BAFTA pay tribute to their support and love of the arts. Guests will enjoy BAFTA-labelled Magnums and bottles of Champagne Taittinger Brut Réserve NV with Villa Maria Private Bin Pinot Grigio and Villa Maria Merlot /Cabernet Sauvignon throughout the evening.

What better way to enjoy the thrill of the awards ceremony than to settle-down with your TV and sip a glass or two of the same wines as the stars. Taittinger is widely available – Waitrose, Majestic, Asda at around £35 a bottle and the two Villa Maria wines are both available at Asda, with the Pinot Grigio also available at Waitrose and Tesco at around £10.75 (£14.55 for the red).

Motorists will need green card to drive in EU if there's a no-deal Brexit

$

0
The Association of British Insurers has issued some helpful advice for drivers in the case of a no-deal Brexit.

The organisation has said that people who want to to drive their vehicle in the EU will need a green card to prove they are insured after March 29.

The documents are supplied by your insurer and, if you travel without one, you may be breaking the law. The same requirements will apply to EU motorists travelling to the UK.

The new rules will affect people who drive across the Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland border, anyone planning to take their vehicle to Europe (for example, a family planning a holiday to France in the Easter holidays) and freight companies transporting goods into the EU after March 29.

The association has answered the most common questions drivers might have:

If there is no-deal, will I need to carry any documents to prove I have the right insurance cover?

Yes - a physical copy of what is called a Green Card. Green Cards are an international certificate of insurance, guaranteeing that the motorist has the necessary third-party motor cover. They are not actual cards, but rather paper documents printed on green paper.

So I will still be able to use my insurance to drive in other EU member states after Brexit?

Yes. All UK motor insurance providers will continue to provide the legal minimum motor insurance cover for travel to EEA countries. You will not need to buy additional third- party motor insurance policy cover when travelling to these countries with a UK-registered vehicle.

How do I get a green Card?

Contact your insurer. They will send you your Green Card. You need to carry the physical document when you travel.

How long will that take?

You should allow about one month before you travel.

How much will it cost?

This will depend on your insurer. It is possible that there may be a small administrative charge.

What if I travel without one?

You will be breaking the law. You may be accused of driving without insurance and could be subject to a fine, having your vehicle seized or prosecution.
The only other legal option available would be to buy local insurance once you arrive in the country of travel, but this not be widely available and may be more expensive than UK-issued policies.

Southern Rail has warned its passengers to travel home as early as possible as sleet and snow are predicted in Sussex this evening (January 31).

It also warned people to take extra care as platforms may be slippery.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning predicting snow and further icy conditions could be on the way this afternoon.

The rail company warned that sleet and snow could cause disruption to services today (January 31), and said: “We advise passengers to travel earlier this evening if possible, in case of disruption caused by colder weather.”

And tomorrow (February 1), the rail operator said cold temperatures and icy conditions could cause delays.

It is set to run a number of ‘ghost trains’ to help keep the tracks clear in the early hours.

A Southern Rail spokesperson said: “The Met Office has issued several yellow weather warnings across the Govia Thameslink Railway network over the next few days.

“Trains across the Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Great Northern network are expected to run normally.

“Throughout this period of cold weather, you are advised to take extra care when boarding and alighting services, and also whilst walking around the station, as walkways and platforms may be slippery.

“Staff are proactively treating station platforms and car parks to avoid slippery surfaces, however should you come across any areas which require additional treatment, please speak to a member of station staff or get in touch with us on Twitter.”

Baby boy died after ambulance service did not answer Sussex mum’s 999 call

$

A teenage mum who realised her baby boy was not breathing in the middle of the night called 999 but the ambulance service did not pick up the phone.

Lauren Braisby desperately tried to save her tiny son Jenson with CPR as she waited on the phone for more than four minutes.

But despite the best efforts of his 17-year-old mum and some paramedics they met on the way, Jenson was pronounced dead within minutes of arriving at Eastbourne District General Hospital.

An inquest into Jenson’s death was held at Eastbourne Town Hall this morning.

Jenson and his twin brother Alfie were born premature in July 2017 and had to spend time recovering in a specialist neonatal unit.

Both had been discharged and were living with their mum in Highgrove Crescent in Polegate when tragedy struck in the early hours of July 25.

Coroner’s officer Karen Brown said: “Lauren called 999 after finding Jenson unresponsive just after 4am.

“Lauren told them that her baby needed an ambulance as he was not breathing.

“The call lasted four minutes and three seconds and was not answered by the ambulance service.”

READ MORE: Boss of Sussex’s ambulance service to leave after less than two years at helm

When the ambulance service continued not to answer, Lauren put her seven-week old son in the car and set off for the hospital, the inquest heard.

She managed to flag down an ambulance on route and paramedics battled to save Jenson’s life.

However he was confirmed dead just minutes after arriving at Eastbourne District General Hospital.

Speaking at the inquest, consultant paramedic James Bradfield was asked why Lauren’s call was never picked up.

According to South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) policy at the time, Jenson would have been a ‘RED1’ incident, meaning paramedics should have been at his door within eight minutes.

Mr Bradfield said: “There were insufficient members of staff on duty in the main operations centre at the time of the call, which was the root cause of the result the 999 call was not answered.

“The 999 operator did not get a response from our control room because at the time there were not enough advisors able to take that call.”

The coroner was told the reason for the low staff numbers was sickness.

However SECAmb staff told the inquest that improvements have been made to ensure such a tragedy never happens again.

A post-mortem examination ‘failed to ascertain’ any factors which could have contributed or caused Jenson Braisby’s death, the inquest heard.

Pathologist Simi George categorised the case as a sudden unexplained death of an infant.

Senior coroner Alan Craze said: “It is a failure by the ambulance service to pick up the phone at all.

“There was no one to take that call.”

However he added: “We are dealing with human beings, hardworking human beings in the middle of the night, and we can’t expect to get it right every time. That is a fact of life.”

He gave a conclusion of an unexplained sudden infant death from natural causes.

He added: “One of the sad things for me has it is not been possible to engage the parents of this boy in the inquest process because the other twin is extremely ill and it is taking up all of the mother’s time.”

Mr Craze asked that his condolences be passed on to Jenson’s family.

READ MORE: SECAmb improves rating but remains in special measures

Following the inquest, a spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) said: “Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time and we are very sorry for the service they received in such tragic circumstances.

“We have worked with the coroner and attended today’s inquest to give evidence.

“We also carried out our own thorough investigation and have made significant improvements to our call answer performance thanks, in part, to improved recruitment and retention of staff in our Emergency Operations Centres.”

Travelling after Brexit - how it impacts data roaming and driving abroad

$
0
0
It's not just trade deals and legislation that are a mine field when it comes to Brexit - even planning your next holiday might be tricky.

It could be you have concerns about if your flight will still take off or what you need to do if you are driving in Europe.

Travel company First Choice and ABTA, the leading association of travel agents and tour operators, have released details in a bid to help travellers.

Will flights still go even if a deal isn’t reached?

First Choice said: “We know that flights taking off in the UK will still be permitted to fly within the European Union’s airspace, even it a deal isn’t reached - that’s been confirmed by the European Commission.

“Even if we have a no-deal Brexit, flights between the UK and the EU will still take place as normal. Even when a deal is decided, nothing will happen overnight - we’ll go into a period of transition for two years up until late 2020.”

Read more: What will Brexit mean for you and your family?

What about if I'm driving while on holiday?

For those that choose to drive abroad ABTA says that those with a full UK driving licence may need to apply for a relevant International Driving Permit.

These cost £5.50 and are available directly from the Post Office - the RAC and AA will not be issuing them from February 1.

There are two IDPs depending on which country you are visiting - drivers travelling between different countries (France and Spain, for example) may need both types.

ABTA said: “The Government is working to extend the network of Post Offices where you can apply for an International Driving Permit, and has plans to roll these out in more branches across the UK from 1 February 2019.

“Check carefully which permit is required for each country you intend to drive within, as you may need more than one permit to comply with the law.”

You may also need a green card. Find out more here: Motorists will need a green card to drive their own vehicle in EU

Any other areas of concern?

Another area that could be impacted on is data roaming.

Under EU rules the cost of making calls, sending messages or using the internet on your phone in the EU is the same in the UK.

ABTA said: “If the UK leaves without a deal these rules will no longer apply - however, some UK companies have said they may continue to offer this benefit to their customers. Before you travel, check with your mobile phone provider about the costs of using your phone in the EU.”

Defender leaves Crawley Town to join Dundee United on Deadline Day

Crawley Town have confirmed that defender Mark Connolly has today left the club and joined Scottish Championship side Dundee United for an undisclosed fee.

The club announced the story in it's website saying: "With a heavy heart, the club accepted Mark's transfer request, citing family reasons."

Connolly leaves the club after two and a half years with the Reds - his second spell in West Sussex having also made 70 appearances between 2012 and 2014. He has made 104 appearances for Crawley since rejoining the club from Kilmarnock in the summer of 2016 and this season scored in a Carabao Cup tie against Bristol Rovers.

Memorable goals for Connolly include winners against Blackpool and Lincoln City, and had been an almost weekly starter.

Connolly joined the club for the first time in 2012 from Bolton Wanderers and quickly became one of the favourites amongst supporters for his head on the line defensive style and willingness to throw his body in front of anything for the team.

He left for Kilmarnock in the summer of 2014 but was to return to the Red Devils in July 2016 after the expiry of his contract, and marked his full return by helping his side to an opening day 1-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers. His brave performances continued to earn more plaudits from supporters for the second time. His last appearance came in our home match against Port Vale two weeks ago.

Director of Football, Selim Gaygusuz said: "We understand Mark's wishes to leave as he has just welcomed a new baby and we know how important his family is to him. This is the right move for him. Conns has been a brilliant servant to this club and he will be hugely missed around the dressing room and club offices. We really do wish him all the best."

The club added: "We'd like to wish Mark, Rosa, Ora, and new baby Rohan all the very best for the future. All the best in Scotland, Conns!"

Two-year driving ban for Crawley waiter

A Crawley waiter has been banned from driving after he was breathalysed by police and found to be over the drink-drive limit.

Police say that Radu Matei, 24, of Castlerigg Way, Maidenbower, was arrested in Worth Park Avenue, Crawley, on December 13 and charged with driving with 107mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on January 17, Matei was disqualified from driving for 24 months and sentenced to a 12-month community order, requiring him to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £85 victim surcharge, say police.

Matei was arrested as part of Surrey and Sussex Police’s Christmas crackdown on drink and drug-drivers, which ran from December 1 2018 to January 1 2019.

A total of 240 arrests were made in Sussex. Of these, 82 have since been convicted, say police. The remaining have either been charged, released under investigation or released without charge.

Will I still be able to take my pet abroad after Brexit?

$
0
0
People who want to take their family pet abroad may be facing extra hurdles if the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal.

At the minute, you need a pet passport for your dog, cat or ferret if they’ll be travelling from the UK to the EU and vice versa.

Pet passports list the different treatments your pet has had and ensures they are microchipped and up to date with their rabies vaccine, if necessary.

The passport means your beloved pet won't have to go into quarantine on arrival into the country.

If the UK leaves without a deal, then the rules will change and pet passports issued in the UK would no longer be valid.

In this case, pet owners would need to get a health certificate - and the bad news is, this will take at least four months. Your pet will need a rabies vaccine with blood samples (to be sent to an EU-approved laboratory) taken 30 days after the jab. You will then have to wait three months after the samples come back clear.

However, reader Kevin Regan got in touch to say that, in his experience, the test (called a titer test) is not as straight-forward as it sounds. He warns that the process may take much longer than the four months advised by the government.

He said: "The rabies test has to show the pet has a antibody level greater than 0.5. However, there is no certainty that even a fully correctly-vaccinated dog with an updated booster less than weight months ago will pass.

Read more: What is martial law and why might it be introduced after Brexit?

"That's a Catch 22 I've fallen into - I had my dogs tested but even though they are healthy and fully vaccinated neither have "sufficient" antibodies to be certified as being acceptable.

"When you read up about the titer test, it merrily states "antibodies may wane rapidly within five to eight weeks of the vaccination". Given that you have to wait 30 days before taking the blood sample, it just gives five days for a test before the antibodies MAY "wane rapidly".

"I now face the prospect of having both dogs re-vaccinated, even though the vaccine is supposed to provide three years protection before requiring a booster. That's why I thought it would be a formality - not so!

"The only advice offered is to re-vaccinate using a different rabies vaccine brand - at my expense and then get another set of blood test at least 30 days after re-vaccination, and with no guarantee that this will be successful. It really is unbelievable, let alone the expense incurred."

Pet owners are advised to contact their vet for up to date advice as soon as possible - but at least four months before they are planning on travelling.

Bury v Crawley Town: Can Reds break down the best home record in League 2?

$

After finally triumphing on the road last Saturday Reds travel to Bury this week looking to pick up some more valuable away points.

Last Saturday saw the Reds pick up an away win for the first time in over four months.

A dramatic penalty save from Glenn Morris in the 90th minute meant Crawley travelled home with all three points on the road, for the first time under Gabrielle Cioffi. The win was a huge relief to all the fans that had travelled to the County Ground and it was certainly a great day.

SEE ALSO Connolly issues parting message to fans as he leaves Crawley Town for Dundee United | Crawley Town fans delighted with the 'new Jesse Lingard' from Manchester United but is defender leaving? | Crawley Town make deadline day signing from Manchester United

This week Reds will have to break down the best home record in the division, in order to pick up points, with Bury imposing a very good record on home soil. They’ve picked up 34 out of a possible 45 points on home soil and they also pose a very good goal threat. 58 goals scored by Bury this season in the league, only Manchester City having more in the whole of English football.

38 of those goals have come at home and only conceding 16 goals shows the threat that Bury have. They currently occupy third place with only Mansfield and Lincoln sitting in front of them in the table. They will be looking to gain automatic promotion this year and bounce straight back to league one, following their relegation last season.

Bury have a familiar face to Crawley in Nicky Adams, who was very highly rated by all Crawley fans during his spell with the club. He will pose a big threat as he scores and assists a lot of Bury’s goals. Bury have two players who both have 12 league goals this season, Nicky Maynard and Jay O’Shea. Adams also has 10 assists to his name this league campaign, the highest in the whole division.

After deadline day passed Reds lost defender Mark Connolly to Dundee United as he moved away from the club after a second spell. That leaves Reds with one less defender in the squad for the remainder of the season. However, the signing of Manchester United midfielder Matty Willock will hopefully be a promising one and he is available to play on Saturday against Bury.

Hopefully Reds can continue from the positive performance last week and get some more points on the road this week.
