Surrey Police has released an e-fit in connection with an assault in Horley in September which left the victim with an eye injury.

The incident took place between 1am and 2am on 13 September in Victoria Road. Following an altercation, the suspect is alleged to have headbutted the victim, causing him to fall to the ground, where he was kicked in the back and chest.

The suspect then pushed his fingers into the victim’s eyes, causing a severely swollen left eye and burst blood vessels. The victim, who is in his 30s, also suffered bruising to his chest and forehead.

The suspect is described as white, in his 20s, 5ft 6 tall, of medium build, with short brown hair and was wearing a tee-shirt.

Detective Constable Colin Snell, who is investigating the incident, said: “The victim was left with a nasty eye injury following this assault which appears to have occurred after he became involved in some sort of altercation with the suspect and his group of friends.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who witnessed this incident, anyone who recognises the person in the e-fit, or anyone with any other information, to come forward as soon as possible so that I can progress my enquiries.”

Daughter back from the dead after 46 years

$

A mum who believed her daughter had died shortly after birth was stunned when she got in touch 46 YEARS later - and they are now spending their first Christmas together.

Bev Freeman-Fletcher, now a carer living in Crawley, was forced to give up her child for adoption after giving birth at 16 and was later told the tot had died.

But Kim was alive and, after growing up wondering who her mother was, hired a private detective to track her down.

She eventually traced carer Bev to her work and opened their first-ever conversation on the phone with: “Hello, I’m your daughter”.

Single Bev is now due to spend Christmas with her daughter Kim Gouws at her home in South Africa.

The 62-year-old told yesterday (Weds) how she has spent her whole life wondering what happened to her child.

“I’ve been on my own with this terrible heartache, I have been crying all these years and quite frankly being 62 I thought if anybody was going to find me they would have found me by now,” she said.

“I gave up. I felt a waste of space.

“But now I have this whole brand new family I knew nothing about and I’m going to get to know them only at the young age of 62.”

Bev, who was born to a British mum in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, was disowned by her family and forced to give up her baby in 1970.

But her daughter, now 45 and working in the hotel industry, enlisted a private detective to seek out her biological mum.

She proved difficult to trace because she had moved to South Africa in 1980 before moving to the UK in 2001.

Bev said: “My boss said a lady called Kim from South Africa was asking to talk to me and for my number.

“I told her I didn’t know anyone by that name and if they had anything to say they could tell her.

“She nearly fell off her seat when Kim said she believed I was her mother.”

Her boss, who had been completely unaware that Bev had a daughter, told her the news that night and Bev promptly called the number.

She said: “All she said to me at the start was, ‘Hello, I’m your daughter’.

“It took me a while to get my composure.

“Then she started telling me about herself and how she is married with three children and one of her children had just had a baby boy.

“So I suddenly had three grandchildren and a great grandchild. It was just mind-boggling.”

Bev, who has never married, has forged a relationship with Kim, communicating through Skype and mobile messaging service WhatsApp.

And now Bev is to fly to Kim’s home in Mossel Bay, South Africa, on December 18 to celebrate Christmas and even her daughter’s 46th birthday on January 10.

Kim will also introduce her to her husband, three children, grandchild and her adoptive parents during the trip.

Bev said: “For years I have spent Christmas Day working in some way as I didn’t have any family.

“My daughter’s family have been so welcoming.

“I’ve got so many presents there won’t be any space in my suitcase for clothes.”

Great-grandmother Bev’s moving story echoes that of novel The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, which was made into a film starring Steve Coogan and Judi Dench.

Brighton still looking at loan window

ALBION boss Chris Hughton admits he could well bring another body into the club before this evening’s loan window slams shut.

With left-back Gaetan Bong and striker Sam Baldock out until the new year, the club have been on the look-out for replacements.

Hughton’s side have been linked with Manchester United forward James Wilson, while Dundalk’s Richie Towell has also been mentioned.

With just a couple of hours to go before the window closes, Hughton admitted a new addition may come in and said: “We are working as hard as we can and looking at all the options that we possibly might bring someone in.

“As it currently stands at this minute, if we can do something and it’s right then we will do but certainly with regards to the squad we have at this minute they have shown all season that they are competitive.

“So, if it ends up with the current squad we have now, I’ll be more than happy with that.

Three Bridges 2, Brighton 1: Faili’s side stun Albion in Senior Cup

$

0

Three Bridges produced a superb second-half fightback to knock Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-21 out of the Sussex Senior Cup last night.

Goals from Ben Godfrey and Sam MacVicar in the last 17 minutes saw the Ryman League South Division overturn a half-time deficit at the Jubilee Field against Albion’s young prodigies.

This was a brilliant victory for Bridges and one that they eventually deserved for a second-half display of both skill and determination.

Unsurprisingly, it was Brighton who looked the sharper and slicker in the early stages and they took the lead after just nine minutes following a misplaced pass by Dan Mobsby.

A quick through ball found Daniel Akindayini, whose looping shot looked set to clear the crossbar until it suddenly dropped into the left of the goal.

Akindayini alone probably could have had a hat-trick by half-time, but some good saves by Kieron Thorp and occasional sloppiness by the visitors kept Bridges’ interests alive.

They themselves had chances, MacVicar hitting four great low crosses which somehow evaded the rest of the Bridges attack, whilst Godfrey had a solid drive well held by Harry Doherty and a cracking shot by Hakeem Adelakun was similarly dealt with.

Two half-time substitutions and a change of system led to Bridges more than matching their opponents after that, and at the back the ever reliable Jamie Crellin and Nigel Brake were resisting the speedy Brighton attackers.

It took until the 73rd minute for Bridges to snatch the equaliser though when Mitchell Casselman’s persistence won a corner.

Steve Sargent delivered an inviting ball to the far post and Godfrey dived to head home superbly.

A swerving shot by James Tilley hit the post as Brighton suddenly woke up again, but after 79 minutes a goalmouth melee finished with MacVicar lashing the ball home for what proved to be the winner.

Thorp had to make two important saves in the closing stages, but Paul Faili’s side and the management team deserve all the praise for turning things around and earning a third round tie at home to Eastbourne Borough.

Bridges: Thorp; D.Mobsby; Daniel (Casselman 45), Sargent, Brake, Crellin, Pulling (Lansdale 45), Godfrey, MacVicar, Adelakun (Otobo 90+1), Whitehead. Unused subs: Carney, Jones.

Brighton: Doherty, Hunt, Starkey, Molumby, Dallison, Barclay, Tighe (Ward 79), Hutchinson (Tilley 62), Akindayini, Harper (Harris, 56), Monakana. Unused subs: Sanchez, Deen.

Referee: Paul Saunders.

Mix-up leads to new market venue

$

A mix-up over trading permits has led to another new site for Crawley Market.

The market was due to move from the High Street to the The Broadway and Haslett Avenue West this month - but now it is to move temporarily to Queens Square.

The switch follows a discovery by Crawley Borough Council that Haslett Avenue West does not have street trading status.

The move to Queens Square is taking place this week, ahead of the area’s major £3.2m facelift.

Councillor Peter Smith, cabinet member for planning said: “There isn’t a specialist Christmas market in the square this year so I’m sure stallholders will be delighted to trade there, especially when our festive events are taking place on Saturdays in the run-up to Christmas, giving the square an even greater buzz.”

The council is to allow the Friday and Saturday market to operate on a temporary basis in Queens Square until the middle of February.

The council is also allowing market traders to operate in Queens Square on Monday December 21 and 22.

Councillor Smith said: “Once it came to our attention that we can’t at the moment extend the market into Haslett Avenue West it was an easy decision to move it temporarily to Queens Square.

“We believe this will give market traders an excellent temporary alternative location over the Christmas period and into the New Year while officers seek a resolution to this matter.”

Meanwhile, the council is applying for street trading consent for Haslett Avenue West. If approved by the council’s licensing committee on January 12 , it’s expected that market stalls will move to their new home on The Broadway and Haslett Avenue West from February 19.

Hughton expecting another tricky test

$
0
0

Albion boss Chris Hughton is expecting a tough task when his side take on one of the Championship’s surprise packages so far this season, with Birmingham City visiting the Amex on Saturday.

When the campaign kicked off back in August, very few would have predicted Saturday’s clash would see second take on sixth. Brighton remain unbeaten so far this season, having not lost any of their opening 17 league fixtures.

But The Blues have also impressed so far and currently occupy the final play-off place. A fine job so far this season from their boss Gary Rowett has seen him guide the club to eight victories from 17 games.

That strong start has seen him linked with the Fulham and QPR jobs this week and Hughton knows his side will face another tricky test on Saturday.

He said: “I think you could class them as a surprise package this season.

“If you look at where they started at the start of this season - with a lot of players leaving over the previous two seasons and not having the finances that many sides do in this league.

“So I think Gary Rowett has done a really good job there. They have great consistency in the team and are not a side that changes personnel too often.

“They have had some very good results away from home this season and have hit a little bit of a blip at home.

“But they will be coming here full of confidence after an impressive result at Fulham in their last away game.”

Saturday’s clash will come just a little too soon for Andrew Crofts (hamstring) and Kazenga LuaLua (groin) but the Seagulls are set to welcome back Inigo Calderon, Uwe Hunemeier and Rohan Ince for the clash.

Hughton added: “Andrew Crofts is close but the likelihood is he will need just a little while longer in order to recover.

“Kazenga LuaLua is in a similar position to Andrew and he will be given just a little while longer in order to make sure he is okay.

“The three that I expect to be back are Inigo Calderon, Uwe Hunemeier and Rohan Ince.

“Inigo has trained all week and he was just ill last weekend, Uwe I think will be fine and we are expecting Rohan to return to training tomorrow.”

Albion are closing in on yet another record, with Queens Park Rangers’ 19-game unbeaten start the best in the history of the Championship, back in 2010, now well within their reach.

With home games against Birmingham and Charlton coming in the next two weeks, Albion could well match that achievement, however Hughton is refusing to look too far ahead and just wants his side to focus on Saturday’s game.

He said: “A lot of people may well have put the two together and will be looking at us to match that but for us it’s just about winning games.

“I would like the record to go on for as long as possible but we all know how difficult that is to carry on.

“The next game is the most important for us and if we can get a result on Saturday it keeps us in in our current position or potentially higher in the table.”

Albion complete loan signing

ALBION have completed the singing of Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Rajiv van La Parra on a one-month loan deal.

La Parra has made seven appearances for Wolves this season, with the last coming against Middlesbrough at the end of October.

He played 41 times last season as he helped Wolves to a seventh-place finish where the club just missed out on the play-offs on goal difference.

Albion boss Chris Hughton told Seagulls.co.uk: “With Sam Baldock currently injured and Kazenga LuaLua having missed the amount of games he has, we have been very keen to bring in offensive options.

“In Rajiv we have a player who was a regular player in Wolves’ promotion chase last season.

“He will give us pace and creativity in the forward areas, and supplements our existing wide options.

“He is something different to the players we already have here, and I am delighted to have him on board.”

The midfielder will be available for Saturday’s home clash with Birmingham City.

Safety warning over button batteries in children’s Christmas toys

Parents and others buying children’s Christmas toys are being urged to check that any small ‘button’ batteries are securely fixed in place.

They are used to power many children’s toys, but are highly dangerous if accidently swallowed.

Peter Aston, West Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards manager, said: “This is not scaremongering. As well as being a choking hazard, if a button battery is swallowed by a child, the electrical charge creates caustic soda inside the body.

“This can burn a hole through the throat and major blood vessels and children can bleed to death. We shall be buying a selection of cheap button battery powered toys in the run-up to Christmas to check they are safe.”

The warning follows an awareness campaign by the Child Accident Prevention Trust.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “We really urge parents and carers to ensure all toys that use button batteries have the battery compartment properly secured to meet the required toy safety standards.

“There are many cheap imports where this is not the case. Before buying, we suggest people check to make sure the batteries aren’t easily accessible to young children.”

Parents and carers are also warned not to leave replacement button cell batteries or items powered by button cells within reach of young children.

Examples of such products that contain button batteries are: calculators, hearing aids, children’s toys, small remote controls, musical greeting cards, animated Christmas decorations, children’s thermometers, and flameless candles and nightlights.

If anyone has bought a toy that allows easy access to button cell batteries they can alert Trading Standards by calling Citizens’ Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506 or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport

Murphy hoping Albion make the most of home comforts

Jamie Murphy is hoping Albion can make the most of home comforts in the coming weeks.

Brighton face two games at The Amex in as many weeks, with Birmingham City and Charlton the visitors on the next two Saturdays.

The Seagulls have made an impressive start at home this term, picking up six victories and two draws in their opening eight games.

They currently sit second in the Championship, behind leaders Hull on goal difference.

Murphy feels the upcoming home matches give Albion a great chance to pick up a good points return and said: “You always want to win your home games.

“Whether you are at the top or bottom that doesn’t change. Home games are almost always must-win, so we’ll be giving everything we have to try to win both matches.

“But we know it’s going to be tough, there are no easy games in this league and we are going to have our work cut out.

“All of the squad are excited by these next couple of home games. Every home game always excites any player, having the crowd behind you and going all out for the win, so we are looking forward to it.”

Murphy joined Albion in August for an undisclosed fee from League One Sheffield United.

The winger, who began his career at Motherwell in the Scottish Premier League, notched 12 times for The Blades last term.

Since his arrival, Murphy has made ten appearances and found the net three times, with one of those coming in Albion’s last home match against Milton Keynes Dons.

He feels he has made a positive impact on the side so far but feels there is still a lot of room for improvement.

He added: “I think I’ve made a positive impact since coming to the club. I’ve managed to net a couple of goals and been involved in games, so I’m loving it here so far.

“The staff and players are great and so is the training ground but I feel I can always learn more.

“I don’t think there is anything I could say I’m perfect at, so it’s about working hard and improving.”

Climate change protest brings advent down to earth

CHRISTIANS will be bringing advent down to earth with a unique online calendar.

Taking the form of ‘thought for the day’ style audio clips, the podcast calendar is designed to inform listeners about the United Nations climate change talks in Paris.

It will be launched on Tuesday by A Rocha UK, a Christian conservation charity based in London, and will feature clergy and conservationists carrying specially-written podcasts to promote prayer for the planet.

Churches and theology director Dr Ruth Valerio, who lives in Chichester, said: “We have an amazing line-up of contributors. I am excited about how this calendar can play a unique role in encouraging Christians to pray, reflect and act during the UN talks and the advent season.

“After the ‘coffee cup controversy’ and supermarket commercials starring a man in the moon and a clumsy cat, A Rocha UK offers Hope for the World.”

Dr Valerio’s team produced the podcast calendar of wise men and women bearing gifts.

Each day will bring a different message and contributors include Alpha pioneer Nicky Gumbel, TV presenter Peter Owen-Jones, Christian Aid chief Loretta Minghella, botanist explorer Sir Ghillean Prance and CAFOD director Chris Bain.

The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference takes place at Le Bourget from Monday until December 12.

Dr Valerio will be speaking at a climate march in London on Sunday, part of a worldwide programme of protest walks in major cities on the eve of the conference.

The podcasts can be heard at http://advent.arocha.org.uk.

UPDATE: ‘Delight’ at redevelopment of landmark Crawley building despite office shortage

Crawley has a ‘shortage of appropriate business units’ in the town centre, the council’s cabinet member for the economy has admitted.

Yesterday (Thursday November 26), the Crawley Observer reported that Overline House is set to be redeveloped.

Cllr Peter Smith, cabinet member for property and economic development, said he is ‘delighted’ that the landmark building next to Crawley Railway Station will undergo redevelopment.

He said: “We are delighted a planning application is going to be coming forward for this site. We have been working with the developer and the owners of the building to bring that forward.”

However, Cllr Smith added that the town centre lacks office space due to units being converted into homes.

Businesses and organisations based at Overline House have been told to leave the site within six months.

He said: “We have been campaigning to get the government to stop the conversion of office buildings into residences in the town centre.

“We have been lobbying Henry Smith to support us, and he said he is not supporting us on that.

“We know there is a shortage of appropriate business units in the town centre and we have to do something about that.”

John Donaldson, executive director of Arora Property, which owns the building, said the redevelopment of the site could be a ‘major catalyst’ for the regeneration of Crawley town centre.

He said: “We have tried repeatedly to let the building for short term tenancies, given the age and the relatively dated and obsolete condition of the building.

“Even with a low rental figure we were unable to complete any significant tenancy agreements.

“As our attempts have proved unsuccessful, we have been progressing redevelopment proposals for the property.

“In the meantime, the Arora Group continue to manage the building and have served notice on the small number of current occupiers in order to mitigate operating losses as the building has been under-occupied for some time.

“Whilst the majority of the tenants in the building are on one month’s notice, out of courtesy we have decided to give 6 months notice to allow them to plan their move from the building in order to ensure a smooth transition.

“Plans have not been submitted at this stage and will hopefully be submitted soon as this site represents a major for landmark within the town centre and could act as a major catalyst for its regeneration.

Overline House was acquired by Arora Property in 2011.
