County council to stop subsidising verge marker posts

$

Verge marker posts will no longer be subsidised by West Sussex County Council under new plans.

Since 2011 the authority has spent a total of £108,000 on installing an estimated 3,000 posts, but taking into account customer contributions of £10 a bollard the total cost to the council has been £78,000.

The service was intended to ‘ensure a consistency of street scene across West Sussex’ and stop residents putting stones or logs on the highways to act as verge markers.

But WSCC’s cabinet member for highways and transport is due to stop the verge marker subsidisation scheme, and authorise highways staff to work with residents to ‘look at alternative solutions that enhance the street scene’.

A county council report states that the cost of the service was ‘no longer viable’ given the reduction in highways funding and the ‘insignificant’ benefit the posts provided to road safety.

It reads: “The cost of installation provided by the contractor, including labour costs, was approximately £85.

“Following recent reductions in highways funding the continuation of this scheme is considered unviable; customers had only been paying £10 for each installed bollard.”

From underarm hair to responsible icons - welcome to 2016

The last 12 months was all about emojis, selfies and bingewatching TV, but what can we expect from 2016?

The forecasting company JWT Intelligence has been busy predicting the biggest trends of 2016, and its report makes for some interesting reading. As well as some unsurprising entries like the rise of apps and gaming, there are also some less likely additions, none more so than underarm hair. So throw away your razors, ladies, beauty is going au natural.

Empathy: technology gets a soul

If there is going to be one buzzword for 2016, empathy is likely to be it. There’s even been speculation that Facebook’s forthcoming “dislike” button will actually be closer to an empathy button, so people can express support for friends who may post distressing status updates without appearing to “like” them. As technology, in particular, becomes more embedded in our lives, the successful brands will be those which understand human behaviour and emotion.

Chimerica: China takes on the film industry

China is becoming more dominant in Hollywood as a source of investors and customers. Most recently, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation was funded by Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba. “China is one of the biggest challenges for Hollywood studios. It is the fastest growing movie market in the world, while US box-office attendance stagnates,” explains Anousha Sakoui, entertainment reporter at Bloomberg Business. “One estimate is that China overtakes the US as the biggest box office by 2020.”

Under arm hair: beauty goes hirsute

Remember the outrage when Julia Roberts showed off her unshaven pits at the 1999 Notting Hill premiere? Turns out she was just ahead of her time - 2016 will be the year of underarm hair. Young women have been dyeing their underarm hair a rainbow of colours and posting photos on social media channels from Instagram to YouTube. You have been warned.

Responsible icons: celeb culture comes to an end

While millennial celebrities were predominately from reality TV, generation Z is demanding a new heroes. Meet the generation Z icons, who combine making music, acting and modelling with a social or political message. Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, as well as 18 year old Bella Thorne, who has published her first young adult novel—about dyslexia and singer Lorde, just 19, who writes songs that deal with friendship and alienation are all likely to see their profiles rise this year.

Space: the final frontier enters popular culture

Thanks to the exploits of, among others, Sussex astronaut Tim Peake, who has just spent Christmas on the International Space Station, interest in space is rising in popular culture. The Matt Damon-fronted film The Martian, which opened in October has raked in $460m. A new Google VR tool for schools also allows students to take virtual field trips to Mars.

Online universities: education goes virtual

Online universities are set to rise as education costs soar. It is likely that the UK will take the lead from America where the traditional education system has already come under fire from leading Silicon Valley voices, like PayPal founder Peter Thiel, who compared universities to “a Studio 54 nightclub that’s got an incredibly long line outside and a very small number of people let inside.”

Self-healing materials: technology helps itself

The prospect of self-healing technology speaks to anyone who’s made do with a cracked smartphone screen. A team at the University of Bristol, UK, announced in June 2015 that it had created airplane wings that could repair themselves in mid-air, and was even contacted by L’Oréal, which registered interest in developing self-healing nail polish. A team at TU Delft in the Netherlands, scientists have also created bio-concrete that heals itself using bacteria.

Apps that nag: wearable technology goes up a gear

It started with fitness, then it was stress, diabetes, and a whole manner of health concerns. Now the latest wearable tech concept is a band that keeps track of carbon emissions. Worldbeing is an app and wearable wristband, made of recycled electrical components, that helps consumers stick to daily carbon footprint targets. “In the same way that fitness bands are an inward look at how you’re doing, a band is an outward look at how you’re doing,” designer Benjamin Hubert told the New Statesman.

The end of email: apps take over communications

Email is falling by the wayside as people turn to more informal mediums, even for business communications. Consumers are increasingly bypassing email, search and web altogether, going directly to apps for everything from hailing a car to getting a restaurant recommendation. The group messaging platform Slack, which boats that it can help teams cut email by 48.6 per cent, has recently grown more than 10 per cent per month and now has 1.7m daily active users.

Cuba: mass tourism arrives in Havana

Since the December 2014 announcement that the United States and Cuba had agreed to restore diplomatic ties, travellers have been rushing to see the last of the old Cuba even as brands are competing to be the first in. Airbnb announced in February that it would move into Cuba and Chanel plans to show its cruise 2017 collection in Havana - the first major fashion production in the country since the restoration of diplomatic relations.

The Faroe Islands: unspoilt Nordic beauty

The island chain that T Magazine calls “the next great Scandinavian destination” and a “sort of spectacular Nordic version of Hawaii” has taken a long time to achieve such praise. But by virtue of its isolation and the rising cultural cachet of all things Scandinavian, it’s now recognised as one of the more unspoiled destinations accessible to European and American travellers. In the capital, Tórshavn, diners can feast on some of the world’s freshest catches at the sushi bar Etika, while enjoying the unparalleled natural beauty of the Arctic region.

Instagram: pictures tell a thousand words

Instagram’s user base reached 400m in September and as more brands pile in, it is now featuring more diverse forms of content. Dazed magazine has taken advantage of the high character limit on Instagram captions to publish “instastories,” bite-sized articles that feature a strong visual lead. Literary magazine Virginia Quarterly Review commissions one writer each week to create three to five stories to be published on Instagram.

Natural junk: fast food reinvented

At a time when consumers are becoming distrustful of major food companies, brands are taking the bold step of reimagining junk food with a focus on natural ingredients. PepsiCo has already announced the launch of a naturally flavoured line of drinks, to be called Stubborn. We will also seeing a wave of new confectionery brands that champion natural ingredients.

Inhalable flavours: spirits hit the clouds

The breathable cocktail recently hit the London bar scene, so expect it to move north soon. Food and drink innovators Bompas & Parr created a pop-up called Alcoholic Architecture that allowed guests to immerse themselves in a cloud of gin and tonic, absorbed via the eyes and respiratory system. Meanwhile, at Café ArtScience in the US, a device called Le Whaf turns spirits into flavourful fogs that provide an interesting amuse-bouche but don’t get drinkers intoxicated.

Algae: superfoods go green

While headlines herald seaweed as the next superfood, few have yet realised the game-changing potential of algae. Thrive, the first culinary algae, hit the US market in October and could soon become the next everyday cooking staple this side of the Atlantic. The product has very low levels of saturated fat, and can be grown in tanks without the large agricultural footprint necessary to produce other cooking oils.

Chachaça: flavour of Brazil goes global

Once seen as a cheap drink for the masses, Brazil’s national spirit is going global amid rising Olympic-fuelled interest in the country. Cachaça, the main ingredient in the caipirinha cocktail, is distilled from sugarcane and ubiquitous in Brazil, where it has more than 2,000 colloquial nicknames, but has been little known outside the country until now.

Metabolism boosters: miracle cures

Superfood companies are launching new ranges of ingestible products that promise to simultaneously boost metabolism, wellness, vitality—and thus beauty from within. Botanic Lab in London already delivers plant-based tonics to customers’ doors, including Plantmilk made from “high-functioning, protein-rich, 100 per cent organic plant sources” and more are likely to follow suit.

Freckles: redheads fight back

Part of fashion’s general celebration of all things redheaded, freckles are a must-have and can be added if they don’t appear naturally. In the London Fashion Week spring/summer 2015 shows, Preen and fast-fashion giant Topshop featured freckles applied by renowned makeup artist Val Garland. For Rag & Bone and Edun’s SS 2016 fashion shows, make-up artists Gucci Westman and Charlotte Tilbury added freckles to models’ faces.

Second-hand clothing: reuse and resell

Online retailers focusing on second-hand items, have raked in investors’ cash in the past year. While Amazon struggles to break into the category and eBay offers an uneven experience, new companies in the space promise curation and quality control. Analysts estimate that the secondhand clothing market is growing by six per cent each year, a figure that could expand as more consumers discover online options.

Sound baths: music for the soul

In New York and Los Angeles, people are gathering for “sound baths,” group experiences where participants focus on the vibrations of tuning forks and singing bowls. It’s kind of a step on from traditional mediation and is targeted at young people, who are accustomed to constant stimulation, are sometimes intimidated by the total silence.

Talking toys: artificial intelligence for children

In November 2015, Mattel began selling Hello Barbie, described by the company as the “first fashion doll that can have a two-way conversation with girls.” Featuring speech-recognition technology and a wifi connection, the doll is programmed with more than 8,000 dialogue lines and 20 interactive games. The CogniToys startup has gone even further, creating a dinosaur that can respond to a child’s vocabulary, interests and other traits.

Gamethletes: gaming becomes a profession

The phenomenal rise of online gaming is giving rise to a new breed of professional gamers, commanding celebrity salaries. The League of Legends world championship final was played in South Korea last year, in the stadium built for the 2002 FIFA WorldCup. While 40,000 people watched live in the stadium, 27 million people tuned in via live-streaming sites.

Lifestyle beers: new chapters for brewers

Tapping into the changing desires of young male consumers, beer brands are softening their images and diversifying into lifestyle categories, from premium grooming collections to clothing. Carlsberg has recently launched a new grooming range which, resonating with its well-known beer tagline, it describes as “probably the best men’s grooming in the world.”

Extreme dining: artificial intelligence for children

The latest dining experiences to entice luxury consumers are extreme and about accessing remote settings amid the wonders of nature. Earlier this year, pop-up restaurant Raw:Almond was built over a frozen river in Canada and in June 2015, architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron completed a restaurant on top of Switzerland’s Chäserrugg mountain.

Mark Yates praises second half display

$
0
0

Crawley Town manager Mark Yates praised his team for their second half display against high-flying Portsmouth.

Reds went 2-0 down in the first half hour through goals by Matt Clarke and Kyle Bennett which exposed their defence.

But in the second half they conceded only one goal in the 83rd minute scored by substitute Gary Roberts and created some chances of their own as Gwion Edwards hit the bar, Gavin Tomlin managed a header on target in the box and Matt Harrold struck a chance narrowly wide.

Yates said: “I was really pleased with the effort of the boys. You cannot ask any more of them can we?

“They’ve got a really good squad. We made it too easy for them in the first half. Also, you have to applaud the opposition sometimes. How do you deal with that movement, that quality of play?

“We set-up slightly differently, it didn’t quite work as I would have liked it.

“Conceding the set-piece put them on their way really. We changed it second half and got a bit more contact and looked a bit more solid.

“Although they dominated over the 90 minutes in terms of possession, we’ve hit the bar and were in a couple of positions where you thought, you never know!

“We are not saying we deserved anything from the game, but the second half performance was encouraging.

“They (Portsmouth) are a good side and I hope they go up - I am sure they will. They are comfortable of the ball and they are encouraged to play and they have the players who can.

“There was some good stuff in the second half, there was some stuff that pleased me. The players have worked their socks off for me and that’s what they do. I can’t complain.”

Promoting your site: top 5 tips

$
0
0

It’s the time of year to look back on everything you have done and think about ways you can do things even better in the year ahead. That being said, here are 5 tips to help you promote your website.

If you haven’t got a branded email address already, it may be time to do so. It is easy to get one set up that uses the same domain name as your website. Then whenever you hand out a business card with your email address on, or whenever you email someone, your domain name is front and centre in people’s eyes and minds. It also looks professional and more serious than somethingsomething@hotmail.com!

Your email signature is an opportunity to give people helpful information. Include a link to your website together with any other contact information that is appropriate. If you have a special offer, you might consider adding a line about it here too. Do not abuse your email signature though. Too many links and images will make it appear like spam to many mail servers, which will stop your messages getting through.

If you create content on social media that does not link to anything on your website, then do not expect your website to get any visits. Instead use social media to spread your message, not as the medium for your message. Write content on your own site that you can then share via social media. If you have a blog, make good use of it writing useful pieces that people will want to read and share themselves.

Continuing with social media for a moment, remember to engage and be engaging. Read and respond to other people’s (and businesses’) posts. Not only will it improve your brand image if you are helpful, but people will generally be more willing to read and share your content when you do post something of your own.

Lastly, if you have an amazing offer, or a competition, or a bit of industry news or anything else you want people to see, remember to tell them about it. You might be at a networking meeting, down the pub (a rarity these days) or at an event. Take the opportunity to tell them about whatever it is and direct them to your website for more information. Anyone that is interested will visit your site. It is all about giving people a reason to visit.

These are just some of the things you can do to help promote your business website, but there are many more. What will you do new in 2016?

More than 1.2 million people in the South-East cutting back on winter essentials to pay their rent or mortgage

$
0
0

The New Year may not be very happy for hundreds of thousands of people in the South-East, as research by Shelter reveals over a quarter of rent or mortgage payers in the region are cutting back on winter heating and clothing to meet their housing payments.

This is the equivalent to over 1.2 million people.

The study by housing and homelessness charity Shelter and YouGov shows the strain people in the South-East face this January, with one in 10 rent or mortgage payers fearing they will be unable to meet their housing costs this month.

This is despite the fact that many have already cut back on Christmas to help pay their rent or mortgage, including reducing their spending on presents and food.

With our shortage of affordable homes leaving many families struggling with sky high housing costs, over 100,000 people have sought advice on housing debt from Shelter’s helpline, online, or face-to-face services in the last year.

The charity is urging anyone starting to have difficulties paying their rent or mortgage to get help as early as possible to avoid losing their home.

Shelter’s helpline adviser Danielle Goodwin said: “It never gets easier to hear someone on the phone in tears, and at breaking point from the weight of their spiralling housing payments.

“Every day at Shelter we hear from families who face the bleak choice between missing their rent or cutting back on heating – even though their families have barely had a Christmas to celebrate.

“So many people are feeling the pinch and there’s no shame in asking for help, which is why Shelter is here 365 days a year. Getting advice early can make all the difference, and we’re only ever a click or a call away at shelter.org.uk/advice or on 0808 800 4444.”

Case study: Michelle and her family have had the threat of eviction hanging over them since husband Kevin became self-employed in his job as a builder.

“Even though my husband works as many hours as he can, it’s constantly hand to mouth. We cut back on everything to pay the rent – including food. When the children are at school the heating isn’t on at all, and over Christmas we had to cut back on presents and clothing.

“I try to hide it as much as I can from my youngest children but they know they can’t ask for treats, and not to let anyone they don’t know into the house in case the bailiffs come round. I hate living like that. I recently went to the doctor because the stress of it all has made my asthma worse.

“When I rang Shelter my adviser was really supportive and I felt for the first time, there might be light at the end of the tunnel. I found out that there are things you can do to stay in your home.”

Shelter helpline adviser Danielle Goodwin’s top 5 tips on dealing with rent and mortgage debt:

1. Ask for help early: If you are struggling to pay your housing costs, talk to an expert adviser as soon as possible who can take you through your options and advise on your next steps. Visit www.shelter.org.uk/advice or call Shelter’s free helpline on 0808 800 4444.

2. Focus on housing costs first: Make sure paying your mortgage or rent is the priority. The most important thing is to keep your home, even if you are getting demands from credit card and payday loan companies.

3. Act now on mortgage arrears: Contact your lender as soon as possible if you are behind on the mortgage. They have to try to help you.

4. Get help with rent arrears: Miss two rent payments and you could be at risk of eviction. See if you can claim housing benefit to help pay the rent.

5. Respond to letters and phone calls. It’s natural to want to keep your head down and hope it’ll sort itself out but it’s important to read everything your mortgage lender, landlord or letting agent sends to you. Keep records of every letter and phone call.

Road to close for 18 weeks while new water pipe is installed

$

Work is to start next week on installing a new water main in Borde Hill Lane near Haywards Heath - and drivers are being warned that the road will be closed for 18 weeks while the work takes place.

The water pipe between Copyhold Lane and Rylands Bridge has burst 11 times in the past five years and is now being replaced to stop residents and businesses in the area going without tap water if it were to burst again.

South East Water spokesman Chris Love said: “With 288,000 litres of water being pumped through the pipe each day it’s unacceptable to us that homes and businesses in Haywards Heath go without water when it bursts.

“The safety of the public and our workforce is our number one priority and because the road is already highly congested with utilities, the only space that remains to lay the new pipe is in the centre of the Borde Hill Lane which is why the road will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the project.”

The work will be taking place between the junction of Copyhold Lane and a point 400 metres north of the junction with River’s Road.

Access to all businesses and restaurants along Borde Hill Lane, such as those in Borde Hill Garden, will be maintained at all times.

Work starts on January 11 and will last approximately 18 weeks. A diversion route will be sign posted.

Chris said: “I would like to apologise for the disruption this work will cause, but hope motorists and the local community understand the long term benefits this scheme will deliver.”

COUNTY NEWS: Dog ate underwear (and it didn’t belong to owner’s partner)

Dogs are generally faithful animals, but that sometimes comes into question when their appetite takes over.

Research by vets recently found that a few dogs in the UK have caused problems in the relationships of their owners because of their cravings.

When Vets4Pets surveyed its own veterinary practices to find the most unusual items found in a dog’s stomach, one of the most curious was underwear that belonged to someone other than the partner of the owner.

The survey was carried out among Vets4Pets practices across the UK after the practice in Newton Abbot had to remove a 21-inch riding crop from a boxer dog.

“Underwear and socks are not uncommon items that dogs can eat, but it’s highly unusual to find out they don’t belong to the owner or their partner,” said Dr Huw Stacey, director of clinical services at Vets4Pets.

“On those occasions the vet’s role is simply to remove the item(s) and ensure the dog is fit and well before returning them to their owner(s).

“Of course dogs can often consume items left lying around the house, garden or outdoors, so it’s important that owners are aware of what their pet is doing, in case of an emergency.

“Golf balls, ping pong balls and pebbles are commonly found, often requiring surgery to remove them, but the list we’ve compiled demonstrates that dogs can find a huge variety of items to eat, with or without their owner’s knowledge.”

In one case the practice in Keighley was brought a ‘carpet-eating’ dog that had chewed up a carpet and kept pulling at the thread. Eventually it had eaten so much that one end of the thread was hanging out of its mouth and the other end was coming out of its backside.

Among other more unusual items found was Christmas tinsel, needle and thread and, the middle of an eaten corn on the cob.

In Harrogate, the Vets4Pets practice recently removed a rubber chicken from a small terrier, which amazingly came out fully intact.

“In all the cases we’ve highlighted the skill of the veterinary teams have ensured a happy ending, well certainly for the dog, but by highlighting these items we’re hoping to make owners aware that their pets can eat almost anything,” added Dr Stacey.

“Like all pets, dogs have certain dietary requirements and it’s important that they receive a balanced healthy diet, which doesn’t include items such as chocolate, chicken bones or grapes.”

But the warning from vets extends beyond the more unusual items, with sticks causing one of the most common reason dogs to visit the vets.

Dr Stacey continued, “Stick injuries are very common and can often cause significant harm to a dog and can sometimes be fatal.

“The most common injury occurs when it sticks into the ground, and when the dog runs towards it, they can impale themselves causing deep wounds to the mouth, throat, neck or chest.

“As well as these injuries caused, splinters and fragments can be left behind which can be difficult to find and remove, since they are hard to identify on an X-ray.”

Top 10 most unusual items:

1 – Underwear of owner’s ‘non-partner’

2 – Riding crop

3 – Carpet thread running from mouth to bottom

4 – Needle and thread

5 – Whole baked potato

6 – Rubber chicken (whole)

7 – Christmas tinsel

8 – Corn on the cob middle

9 – Baby’s dummy teat

10 – Barbie doll head (without hair)

Construction industry on the up in south east

The construction industry is on the up after seeing the biggest growth in employment in the south east.

According to figures released by the Department for Work and Pensions around 40,000 more people were employed in construction in the south east last year compared to 2014.

The industry as a whole has grown over the past year with 110,000 more jobs created across the country and pay increasing by more than six per cent.

In the south west the biggest growth was seen in the admin and support industry with 22,000 more people employed in the sector.

London saw the biggest growth in the professional, scientific and technical sector with an increase of 41,000 jobs since 2014.

Employment Minister, Priti Patel, said:“We’re ending 2015 on a real high. Employment is at a record high with 31.3 million people now in work, while unemployment is at its lowest since 2008, and wages are continuing to grow.

“This is fantastic news — and by helping people into work it means more families, up and down Britain, are enjoying the security of a regular paycheque and benefiting from our growing economy.

“And next year, hardworking people will benefit from more support, including the introduction of the National Living Wage and 30 hours of free childcare for working families.

“To all County Times readers, I wish you a Happy New Year, and a fulfilling and a prosperous 2016.”

For those looking for work in 2016 the department has also released the six areas of employment expected to grow the most in 2016.

HOSPITALITY

The hospitality industry is on the up, with 80,000 more jobs than there were a year ago — and the Government is urging people not to dismiss the jobs as “just for teenagers and students”.

Mrs Patel praised café, pub and hotel workers in a speech to the British Hospitality Association this year as the ‘best face of Britain’.

She said: “The hospitality industry provides huge opportunities for career progression. You could start off cleaning tables and end up running a chain of restaurants – the chances to learn and develop are unlimited.”

CONSTRUCTION

There are 111,000 more jobs in construction than in 2014, and regular pay has also gone up 6.3 per cent, more than any other sector.

The Government is ploughing billions into the National Infrastructure Pipeline and supporting the creation of three million apprenticeships, so there’s plenty of opportunity to get ahead.

PROFESSIONAL and SCIENTIFIC

Jobs in the science and tech industry are up 125,000 in the past year, the largest annual rise of any industry.

So if you’ve got an investigative mind and want to find out more in jobs in this field, head to the National Careers Service website and search ‘science and research’ for more hints and tips on how to crack the sector.

ENTERTAINMENT

There are 21,000 more posts in the entertainment sector than there were this time last year – and a series of new openings will help boost this figure in 2016. This includes the launch of a new £40 million Discover England fund to support tourism across the UK, which will lead to more job opportunities.

TRANSPORT

Britain is on the move — and with the biggest road improvement programme since the 1970s and the largest programme of rail investment since Victorian times, it means the number of jobs available has in the industry is also dramatically increasing. Around 55,000 skilled workers will be needed in the transport industry by 2020.

With construction starting on HS2 in the next two years, billions of pounds being pumped into improving transport links in the north as part of the government’s Northern Powerhouse, and the Government’s aim to create 30,000 apprenticeships in the rail and road sectors in the next five years, there’s great potential to speed up the career ladder.

EDUCATION

Thousands of people are choosing to help shape the minds of the next generation, and there’s lots of opportunities for a rewarding career within teaching.

Jobs in the education sector increased by 46,000 in 2015 — and aspiring teachers could receive a tax-free bursary or scholarship of up to £30k from the Government while you train.

Money-raising scheme launched to help pay for maintenance of the South Downs Way

A new money-raising scheme is being launched to help pay for maintenance costs to the South Downs Way.

The South Downs National Park Authority is hoping that people who use the park will donate at least £1 whenever they visit.

Andy Gattiker, South Downs Way manager, said: “We have around 15 thousand pairs of boots, ten thousand tyres and eight hundred hooves travelling the length of the trail each year. That’s a lot of wear and tear.

“We’re so proud that it’s not just one of the best known trails in the country but that people use their experience of it to raise tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of pounds each year for causes ranging from reducing international poverty to beating heart disease or supporting their local hospice.

“We work hard to keep the South Downs Way in good condition and have lots of ideas for projects to improve it – for example, we’d love to install more location specific signposts, put in more drinking water taps and manage more path verges for wildflowers. If everyone who used the trail gave just £1 we could be even more ambitious.”

More than 20,000 long-distance walkers, cyclists and riders complete the 160km South Downs Way every year and many more will explore a section of it.

The South Downs Way is one of England and Wales which are all free to use and managed to high standards. Now trail managers in both countries are hoping that the new donation scheme will help them generate support to make the trails even better.

They say donations of any size are welcome and that 80 per cent of the money received will be used to directly fund improvements to the trail. The remaining 20 per cent will be used to support the trail website, where around 140,000 people go every year to find information on how to access the trail, how to break it up into sections, where to stay and more. The website is not publicly funded.
