TABLE TENNIS: Crawley table tennis starlet Kate Cheer had to settle for runners-up spot for the second year running in the Butterfly Schools’ individual championships held at the The Dome in Doncaster.
Nearly 300 players took part in the biggest one day event in the table tennis calendar.
Cheer, from Bewbush, matched her finish in 2011 when she was beaten 3-1 in the under-11s final by Denise Payet.
The London North player, in contrast, improved on her third place the previous year.
Dan Barna, who plays in the Crawley & Horsham League Premier Division at K2 for Horsham, picked up a bronze medal in the under-16s boys event.
Another Crawley League player, Vinal Patel from East Grinstead, provided the shock of the day in the boys under-19 event when he beat top seed Bradley Tuttle (Hertfordshire) in the quarter-finals before going out in his next match to eventual winner Michael Ho (London South).
There were 750 matches played on 22 tables during a busy day.
